2013 NFL Draft: Detroit Lions Select Ziggy Ansah

The pick is in and the Detroit Lions have made their first selection of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Who: Ezekiel “Ziggy” Ansah
What: Defensve End
Where: BYU
When: Round 1, Pick 5
Why: All Martin Mayhew picks are likely to have a “best player available” element to it but the pick of Ansah also fills a huge need with Cliff Avril and Kyle Vanden Bosch no longer on the team. Jason Jones was signed in free agency to fill one defensive end spot but the Lions look to Ansah to fill a long-term need.

He has only been playing football for a few years and didn’t join the BYU football team until he was cut from the basketball team on a couple of occasions, but he is an explosive athlete and has a near ideal body for an NFL defensive end and projects as a solid player against the run and as a pass rusher.

While there is some projection necessary in this pick the Lions are positioned better than any other to make it based on the time they spent coaching Ansah at the Senior Bowl.
