There are a lot of odd stories that come out of the NFL Draft process. One NFL club asked Dez Bryant some very personal questions about his mother a couple years ago and some 2013 prospects indicated that some teams were trying to get a read on players’ sexuality.
Those questions cross the line and while the Lions haven’t been mentioned as having done anything wrong, that doesn’t mean they haven’t done anything odd during the interview process. Dave Birkett has this golden nugget in a new article at Freep.com:
Before Bjoern Werner could sit down for his combine interview with the Lions in February, coach Jim Schwartz had one request.
“He said before we start you have to do one thing,” Werner recalled today after joining other NFL draft prospects at a youth football clinic at Chelsea Waterside Park. “I was like, ‘What do I have to do?’ He was like, ‘Do, I’ll be back, some Arnold Schwarzenegger quotes.’ That was pretty funny.”
This leaves me with two questions:
1. Did he do it?
2. Is there audio?
Maybe it was meant as a joke or as a legitimate question simply to see how Werner will respond, it obviously went over OK with Werner. Birkett went on to report that Werner hit it off with defensive line coach Jim Washburn.
The Lions have a clear need at defensive end entering the draft and the expectation is that they will draft one relatively early. With Werner likely to be a mid- to late-first round pick, the Lions may need to move around the draft board via trade to end up with Werner.
