With the passing of the franchise tag deadline yesterday, Miami Dolphins running back Reggie Bush is officially set to become a free agent on March 12.
The thought that the Detroit Lions could place a high priority on Bush is nothing new. In fact, the links have been obvious from Matthew Stafford starting to follow Bush on Twitter to Nate Burleson looking directly into an NFL Network camera and telling Bush to come to Detroit.
Dave Birkett reported during the NFL Combine that the interest is real and a lot of people around the league expect the Lions to make Bush their primary target in free agency.
We’re now more than a week removed from that report but the thinking hasn’t changed.
NFL insider John Clayton appeared on ESPN Radio’s Mike and Mike this morning and once again said that he thinks Bush could end up in Detroit. Clayton didn’t put a number to what it might take to land Bush, but he didn’t give any indication that the money could get crazy – the primary fear of those who feel Bush might not end up in Detroit.
The Lions can make contact with Bush’s agent starting on March 9. We could be in for a wild weekend of rumors before signings can become official on March 12.
