Detroit Lions fans have been able to look ahead to the 2013 NFL Draft for quite some time but it is officially draft season league-wide now that all the confetti has fallen and the Ravens have hoisted the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
FanSided.com released their updated mock draft this morning and it comes as no surprise that Josh Hill has chosen a pass rusher for the Lions.
The wrinkle here is that he did so despite popular names Bjoern Werner, Damontre Moore and Jarvis Jones already off the board. So who is the pick?
It’s LSU defensive end Barkevious Mingo. Hill explains:
The Lions have a defense full of potential, but they’re starting to age on the ends and they’ll need to adjust this if they have any hopes to be competitive down the road. Detroit would love to grab an end that can come in and replace either Cliff Avril or Kyle Vanden Bosch, both of whom are likely on their way out in Detroit. Mingo is still raw as a prospect but he’s undeniable as a talent and if the Lions take him at No. 5, they likely won’t be sorry.
Detractors will point to Mingo’s relatively light 240 pound body but he was still able to productive in the ultra-competitive SEC. He is able to use his long arms and rare athleticism to his advantage and should further add to his pass rushing repertoire as he bulks up at the NFL level. Investing such a high draft choice in Mingo does require some faith as he is far from a finished product, but he could be scary player once he is.
