Matthew Stafford may have been a Pro Bowl snub but that didn’t keep him from receiving some honors following his stellar 2011 campaign. Stafford was in Indianapolis during Super Bowl week where he was named the AP’s Comeback Player of the Year.
It was the kind of season that many needed to see from Stafford and kept the Lions from having to even think about getting involved in the Peyton Manning circus.
Free Agency talk heated up and it became apparent there would be no hometown discount with impending free agent Cliff Avril.
Both sides remained hopeful a long-term deal could be reached but the opening of the franchise tag period gave the Lions a fallback plan. Avril went on record as saying he would be disappointed if it came down to the franchise tag but the Lions didn’t want to risk losing Avril to the open market.
The annual scouting combine got underway at just the right time for a hungry fan base.
