Calvin Johnson’s progression through the Madden 13 cover tournament had some fans fearing the Madden Curse would grab hold of the star receiver. The entire notion of the curse is ridiculous on the surface and only looks worse when inspected up close. Even this site’s effort to assuage fears weren’t enough to calm everyone by the time Calvin Johnson was announced as the winner over Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.

Calvin Johnson wasn’t the only football player with Lions ties to get named to a video game cover. Barry Sanders won a vote over other former Heisman trophy winners to appear on the cover of NCAA Football 13 with Robert Griffin III.

Early April brought the release of the new uniforms from Nike. The Lions got some material upgrades but nothing major in the way of new looks. Some teams wouldn’t even go that far while the Seattle Seahawks went all out. The Lions revealed there had been some discussions about an alternate uniform but nothing would be put in place for the upcoming season.

Preparations for the 2012 season bagan with the Lions getting their offseason training program underway a couple weeks before the draft and the NFL’s release of the 2012 schedule.

The draft finally arrived after months of anticipation and word got out that the Lions were willing to trade down in round one. That never happened as they Lions stayed put and selected Riley Reiff – a pick that was widely praised immediately after it was announced. By the time it was all said and done, the Lions had put together and eight-man draft class:

Round 1, Pick 23: Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa
Round 2, Pick 22: Ryan Broyles, WR, Oklahoma
Round 3, Pick 22: Dwight Bentley, CB, UL-Lafayette
Round 4, Pick 30: Ronnell Lewis, DE, Oklahoma
Round 5, Pick 3: Tahir Whitehead, OLB, Temple
Round 5, Pick 13: Chris Greenwood, CB, Albion
Round 6, Pick 26: Jonte Green, CB, New Mexico State
Round 7, Pick 16: Travis Lewis, OLB, Oklahoma
