Last week’s FanSided mock draft had the Lions picking 12th and taking Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner. A fifth consecutive loss has the Lions moving up the draft order and with that comes a different selection in this week’s FanSided mock.
This week’s pick is Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o with the 6th overall pick. The following commentary is included from Josh Hill with the pick:
Everything about Te’o works in Detroit. This is a case where Te’o won’t just help fix the Lions reputation on the field, but ESPN and their cheesy special segments will go nuts with the charitable work he’ll likely be doing in the Detroit community. It’s no secret the Lions have a bad reputation, and adding Te’o not only upgrades the quality of the defense, but it balances out Ndamukong Suh’s general surliness. Detroit could go Dee Milliner here, but if Te’o’s on the board, Jim Schwartz is not wasting anytime in turning the card in.
Te’o has been on my watch list for his playmaking ability, a trait the Lions’ defense has sorely lacked this year. How well he fits into the Lions defense is up for debate. He projects best as a middle linebacker but may be athletic enough to play outside linebacker in a 4-3 defense like the Lions’. If Te’o test well in the speed and agility areas at the combine he could be a strong candidate for the Lions to plug in at OLB until eventually taking over for Stephen Tulloch in the middle. That is, if he’s even available when the Lions ultimately make their selection.
What do you think of the prospect of seeing Manti Te’o in Honolulu blue and silver?
