The conclusion of week 12 makes for a natural point in the season to take a quick look ahead at how the first round 2013 NFL Draft order is taking shape.

Everyone has had their bye so each team has played the same number of games and 11 games worth of results is enough data to at least establish a preliminary pecking order.

The Lions are one of 6 teams currently sitting at 4-7. Those teams would hold picks 7-12 if the draft order was locked in place today. By virtue of their high strength of schedule, the Lions are sent to the back of that pack.

2013 NFL Draft order through week 12:

  1. Kansas City (1-10)
  2. Jacksonville (2-9)
  3. Oakland (3-8)
  4. Cleveland (3-8)
  5. Philadelphia (3-8)
  6. Carolina (3-8)
  7. Buffalo (4-7)
  8. San Diego (4-7)
  9. New York Jets (4-7)
  10. Tennessee (4-7)
  11. Arizona (4-7)
  12. Detroit (4-7)
  13. St. Louis (4-6-1)
  14. Miami (5-6)
  15. St. Louis – from Washington (5-6)
  16. New Orleans (5-6)
  17. Dallas (5-6)
  18. Cincinnati (6-5)
  19. Tampa Bay (6-5)
  20. Minnesota (6-5)
  21. Pittsburgh* (6-5)
  22. Seattle* (6-5)
  23. Indianapolis* (7-4)

If the Lions are able to make a miraculous playoff run they would pick no higher than 21st.

For comparison’s sake, the Lions finished 6-10 in 2010 (one of seven NFL teams to do so) and ended up with the 13th pick in the 2011 draft which they used to select Nick Fairley.
