The concussion Amari Spievey suffered in Chicago has already cost him three weeks of play and it will now cost him the rest of his season. The Lions placed Spievey on injured reserve today to free up a roster spot for cornerback Drayton Florence.
Florence was placed on the injured reserve – designated to return list earlier this year. This is the first year a team could place a player on injured reserve and designate him to return but can only be used on one player. Florence became a prime candidate after breaking his arm in week two due to the Lions’ needs in the secondary. Now, his return is all the more important with Spievey out for the season.
The Lions have had to use Don Carey at safety due to the lack of depth due to injuries. Today’s move allows the Lions to use Carey at safety without taking away from the depth at cornerback. The fact that we’re even talking about a role for Don Carey speaks to the issues the Lions have had with fielding their secondary.
