Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson in Position for Historic Feat

Calvin Johnson is finally getting his due. He’s on the cover of Madden 13, he’s the top ranked wide receiver in fantasy football drafts and he’ll be on the cover of the next ESPN The Magazine.

He’s seemingly everywhere these days but is it possible his greatness is still under-appreciated?

I made CJ the focus of my weekly Lions piece for the Detroit Free Press at Here is an excerpt:

Calvin Johnson has always possessed a freakish set of skills. Still, reasonable people could make the argument that Calvin Johnson hadn’t proven himself as an elite wide receiver prior to last year. That debate is thankfully over and we can now watch to see if Calvin can parlay his monstrous 2011 season into a record setting career.

What is his goal, statistically speaking, for 2012? He answered that question in an upcoming piece in ESPN The Magazine:

“My goal is to be able to have 100 yards for my team every game. There’s some games last year where I had 200 yards. … It’s freaking crazy. But you know, if I can just keep that average up to 100 yards a game, I feel like I’m helping my team, not leaving any plays on the field.”

100 receiving yards in every game? If there is a player in the NFL capable of doing that it is certainly Calvin Johnson. The list after that? Probably no one.

I had more to say on the topic, including the statistical feat Calvin could accomplish that would only be able to be measured on a historical scale. Keep reading at
