The Detroit Lions are about a week into training and it now can’t be taken as anything but bad news that Jahvid Best hasn’t joined his teammates for practice. That fact alone is cause for concern but words out of training camp today justify the fear that something is still very wrong with Best.

At this point it is hard to argue that the Lions are just being cautious and the attitude has to turn from one of caution to one of concern. Kevin Smith now deserves a bump up the fantasy football rankings, especially since Mikel Leshoure has been slowed by a hamstring problem that he admittedly attributes to compensating for his previous achilles injury.
Will Jahvid Best be cleared for contact in time for preseason play or even the start of the regular season? No one knows for sure but Schwartz’s comments today indicate the process will be longer than originally anticipated.
