Well, good morning Detroit Lions fans. Here is the exact news you didn’t want to wake up to this final Sunday morning before the start of training camp:
Cornerback Aaron Berry was arrested for the second time in a month early Saturday morning and charged with three counts of simple assault for allegedly brandishing a firearm, Harrisburg (Pa.) City Police said.
Aaron Berry arrested. Again.
The charges may carry the name “simple assault” but there is nothing simple about this situation. Berry was already in hot water because of a DUI arrest after the conclusion of minicamp in which the Lions organization addressed off-field issues. Now it is hard to argue that Aaron Berry values his role with the Lions higher than acting like a thug on the streets, allegedly.
All Lions players should have been on their best behavior after the issues were addressed at minicamp and it wouldn’t be crazy to consider that a preemptive strike one on everyone’s record. That would put Aaron Berry at strike three and the Lions now have to seriously consider if Aaron Berry is worth the hassle. He likely isn’t, even though he appeared poised to grab a starting cornerback role.
Berry may have been positioned as the “best of the rest” but Alphonso Smith is still around and the Lions have three new rookie cornerbacks from last April’s draft. Today’s news might just mean they need to grow up a little faster than originally planned and it’s all a result of Aaron Berry’s failure to grow up off the field.
