Detroit Lions Select Tahir Whitehead in Fifth Round of 2012 NFL Draft

The Detroit Lions have made their Fifth selection of the 2012 NFL Draft after trading up with the Minnesota Vikings:

Who: Tahir Whitehead
What: Outside Linebacker
Where: Temple
When: Round 5, Pick 3 (138 Overall)
Why: The Lions must have seen something they really like because they sent a 2013 fourth round pick to the Vikings to move up for outside linebacker Tahir Whitehead. The Lions can use depth at linebacker and Justin Durant and DeAndre Levy will be unrestricted free agents following the 2012 season. The pick comes as a surprise since Whitehead was considered more of an undrafted free agent-type prospect. He will bring more athleticism to the Lions’ roster and could turn into a dynamic special teams player.
