Detroit Lions Draft Prospects: Isaiah Frey, CB, Nevada

January 9, 2011; San Francisco, CA, USA; Nevada Wolf Pack cornerback Isaiah Frey (28) warms up before the 2011 Fight Hunger Bowl against the Boston College Eagles at AT

The Lions brought Isaiah Frey in for a pre-draft visit so there is obviously something they like about him. He wasn’t invited to the combine so the visit may have been to get a closer look at his medicals although durability has not been a concern during his collegiate career. Frey is a bigger cornerback but isn’t overly physical. He can play in man and zone coverage and does a good job of finding the ball.

He led the Nevada Wolfpack in interceptions last year as part of a unit that saw great improvement from the previous season. His season was good enough for him to get recognized by Sports Illustrated as an honorable mention on their list of 2011 All-Americans.

With big boards across the internet suggesting that Isaia Frey is an undrafted free agent type, the Lions are likely just doing their due diligence. The chance to gather information on lesser known players is an important part of the draft process – both for making late round selections and for extending camp invites to undrafted players. The Lions might see something they can work with here and if that’s the case, it might be worth a low risk look at him.
