Cornerback Corey Graham isn’t a big name free agent but he is reportedly in to visit with the Detroit Lions and it isn’t difficult to see why both sides would be in interested in each other.
The Detroit Lions have an obvious need in the secondary and have special teams roles to fill since Rashied Davis and Maurice Stovall are free agents. While Graham has seen playing time at corner, he has provided more value to the Bears as a special teams player. In fact, he was been named the NFC’s special teams Pro Bowler last season. That makes for roster value whether or not he ever lines up at a cornerback.
From Graham’s perspective, the Lions have an opportunity for playing time if he can come in and impress the coaching staff. He had a career-high three interceptions last year – including one in that utterly forgettable debacle between the Lions and Bears in Chicago. It’s unlikely Graham will find anyone willing to offer him more than a chance to compete so the Lions situation may be as good as it gets for him this offseason.
We’ll have to wait and see what happens since many of the players that have visited Allen Park for a free agency visit have left without a contract but it would seem this is one case where the fit feels right on both sides.
