Drew Stanton has been buried in the Lions quarterback depth chart since being drafted in the second round in 2007 but free agency is providing him an opportunity to find an increased role elsewhere.
It appears he found what he was looking for.
The New York Jets showed strong interest in Stanton at the start of free agency, enough to bring him in for a visit. Brady Quinn was also scheduled to come in but it is Stanton that gets the contract. The deal is for on year and $1.25 million.

The Jets were one of the early teams to have interest in Peyton Manning but backed out of that race and gave Mark Sanchez a contract extension as a misguided “we’re sorry.” Their commitment to Sanchez makes it unlikely that Stanton will have an opportunity to compete for a starting job immediately but what happens down the road is a complete mystery. Whatever the potential path to playing time ends up being it is surely a better chance than Stanton would have in Detroit.
The Detroit Lions backup quarterback watch now turns to Shaun Hill who is visiting the St. Louis Rams. Re-signing Hill would be a best case scenario although he may prefer to move closer to home by signing with the Rams.
