SLR Detroit Lions Player Of The Year Tournament Third Round: Calvin Johnson vs. Nate Burleson

Today is day seven of the 2011 SideLion Report Detroit Lions player of the year tournament‘s third round! Take a look at the bracket here.

Who will be the seventh player to make our Elite Eight? Polls remain open until midnight on the west coast.

(1 seed) Calvin Johnson
First Round: bye
Second Round: def Jahvid Best

The 2011 season finally put to rest any argument that Calvin Johnson is not an elite receiver. The only question that remains now is where he’ll finish when compared to the all-time greats at his position. 100 yards receiving and a touchdown is a fine day for most receivers but it was an average day for Calvin Johnson in 2011. His 16 touchdowns set a new franchise record and he finished just five yards behind Herman Moore for the franchise record for receiving yards in a season. Forget shading a safety to Megatron’s side of the field, the Saints used defensive alignments that put two corners on CJ at the line of scrimmage in both meetings this year. That is the kind of level Johnson was on this past season.

(4 seed) Nate Burleson
First Round: def Drew Stanton
Second Round: def Tony Scheffler

Nate Burleson caught just three touchdown passes but he was a dependable target in the passing game. His 73 catches and 757 yards were easily enough for third best on the team in 2011 and his veteran leadership is widely recognized as an important influence on the development of the younger receivers. Burleson was also effective running end-arounds, carrying the ball eleven times for 85 yards.

Who should advance to the fourth round of the 2011 SideLion Report Player of the Year Tournament?
