On with Saturday’s picks…
New York Giants (+3) vs. New England Patriots
Revenge will be the theme of the day. It was the New York Giants that ruined the New England Patriots’ perfect season four years ago and you can bet that the Brady/Belichick combo won’t let their Super Bowl legacy be shadowed by two losses to the Giants. On a lesser scale, it was the Giants that handed the Patriots their only home loss of the season.
I can’t imagine any team needing extra motivation to get up for Super Bowl game but the Patriots should have it with their matchup with the Giants. It can be argued that the Giants bring more momentum into the game and their recent success against the Patriots can’t be denied but there isn’t a team in the league that plays better with a chip on their shoulder. Give the points and take the Patriots.
The point total of 53.5 is inching down after sitting at 54 last night so the public is obviously favoring the under. Perhaps that is influenced by the Giants’ 24-20 win over the Patriots in week nine of the regular season.
These are different teams but the Giants and Patriots combined for 31 points four years ago and only last year’s Super Bowl between the Packers and Steelers was the only one of the last seven to cross the 53.5 point mark. The Giants got here on the strength of their defense and the much-maligned Patriots defense has stepped up in their run to the Super Bowl. Take the under.
