Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew went out of his way to defend star defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh’s play on the field this year, saying Suh’s four-sack 2011 season was “really not that different” from his 10-sack rookie season.

At least one national publication agrees.

Though concussions are a hot topic for the NFL right now, the fundamental question surrounding them is long-standing: how to weigh player

safety against playing the game. Jahvid Best is a prime example of a player dealing with the issue.

In a wide-ranging, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell talked about a number of topics on CBS’s 60 Minutes on Sunday. The Detroit Lions were mentioned three times in the 13 minutes feature, with the most interesting aspect focusing on an unreported concussion sustained by safety Amari Spievey in Lions’ playoff loss to the New Orleans Saints.
