SideLion Report has great readers so it makes sense that you should have a say in helping us name the SideLion Report Detroit Lions player of the year. The players have been seeded and placed into a tournament bracket with each matchup determined by a reader vote.
To ensure that everyone has a chance to vote, polls will remain open until midnight on the west coast. At that time, a winner will be declared and the tournament will continue with another matchup the following day.
We’re staying on the defensive side of the bracket today. Who will move on to round two?
(6 seed) Sammie Hill vs. (11 seed) John Wendling
As a former developmental player selected in the fourth round, Sammie Hill has improved in each of his three seasons. He is an important depth player in the Lions’ defensive tackle rotation and was able to remain healthy all season. Hill forced his first fumble of his career and finished with 24 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
The re-signing of John Wendling didn’t make huge headlines last season but he is one of their most important special teams players. If the Lions are pinning a team back deep after a punt you can bet that Wendling is either the man downing the ball or right there just in case. He finished with 25 tackles this season and had to play some safety this year due to the team’s injury problems at that position.
Who should advance to the second round of the 2011 SideLion Report Player of the Year Tournament?
- Sammie Hill (68%, 43 Votes)
- John Wendling (32%, 20 Votes)
