SideLion Report has great readers so it makes sense that you should have a say in helping us name the SideLion Report Detroit Lions player of the year. The players have been seeded and placed into a tournament bracket with each matchup determined by a reader vote.
To ensure that everyone has a chance to vote, polls will remain open until midnight on the west coast. At that time, a winner will be declared and the tournament will continue with another matchup the following day.
We’re hopping back over to the defensive side of the bracket today. Who will move on to round two?
The 2011 season was the first time Willie Young really got a chance to flash his potential and he did just that after earning the right to get some playing time in the rotation at defensive end. He finished with three sacks on the season with his first being the biggest. After taking a 34-20 lead in Dallas the Lions defense was tasked with keeping the Cowboys out of the end zone in the final 1:39 of the game. Five plays later, Tony Romo had wiped away 45 of the 80 yards they needed only to be sacked by Willie Young to force a third and 20. The Cowboys ran two more plays before turning it over on downs but the Young sack essentially sealed the game.
Chris Harris started and finished the season in the NFC North but did so on different teams. Watch a video of Calvin Johnson’s long touchdown pass against the Bears on Monday Night Football and you’ll see Harris as one of two Chicago Bears chasing him towards the end zone. The Chicago brass grew tired of that type of thing and released only to be picked up by their division rivals as a result of a rash of injuries the Lions suffered at safety. Harris finished with one interception and 21 tackles in eight games with the Lions.
