SLR Detroit Lions Player of the Year Tournament First Round: Titus Young vs. Harrison and Durant vs. McDonald

SideLion Report has great readers so it makes sense that you should have a say in helping us name the SideLion Report Detroit Lions player of the year. The players have been seeded and placed into a tournament bracket with each matchup determined by a reader vote.

To ensure that everyone has a chance to vote, polls will remain open until midnight on the west coast. At that time, a winner will be declared and the tournament will continue with another matchup the following day.

Today is the last day featuring two matchups with tomorrow beginning singular matchups between more closely seeded players.

(4 seed) Titus Young vs. Jerome Harrison (13 seed)

The selection of Titus Young in the second round caught a lot of observers off guard but it didn’t take long to prove his worth. In his regular season home debut, Young caught five passes for 89 yards and showed a nice set of hands. His six touchdown catches was tied for second best behind Calvin Johnson’s 16.

Jerome Harrison appeared in just three games and ran for only 41 yards but this will be a season that he’ll never forget. The Lions agreed to a trade deadline deal to send Harrison to the Eagles in exchange for Ronnie Brown but what was supposed to be a routine physical revealed a brain tumor. Rather than suiting up for the Eagles, the deal was nixed and Harrison was scheduled for surgery. His season ended but his life was extended.

(4 seed) Justin Durant vs. Brandon McDonald (13 seed)

Justin Durant arrived in Detroit with less fanfare than position-mate Stephen Tulloch but was an important part of the Lions defense nonetheless. He finished as the team’s fifth leading tackler despite missing three games. Durant also forced a fumble, recovered two others and was credited with a sack.

Nathan Vasher played well late in the 2010 season but the play of Brandon McDonald in the 2011 preseason forced the Lions to cut the veteran and give McDonald a shot. He would up getting cut himself when the Lions needed to make a move for defensive line depth once injury and suspension took their toll but was brought back just a couple weeks later.

Who should advance to the second round of the 2011 SideLion Report Player of the Year Tournament?
