SLR Detroit Lions Player of the Year Tournament First Round: Burleson vs. Stanton and Houston vs. Coleman

SideLion Report has great readers so it makes sense that you should have a say in helping us name the SideLion Report Detroit Lions player of the year. The players have been seeded and placed into a tournament bracket with each matchup determined by a reader vote.

To ensure that everyone has a chance to vote, polls will remain open until midnight on the west coast. At that time, a winner will be declared and the tournament will continue with another matchup the following day.

We have two more first round matchups today, who will join Rob Sims, DeAndre Levy, Brandon Pettigrew and Louis Delmas in the second round?

(4 seed) Nate Burleson vs. (13 seed) Drew Stanton

Nate Burleson caught just three touchdown passes but he was a dependable target in the passing game. His 73 catches and 757 yards were easily enough for third best on the team in 2011 and his veteran leadership is widely recognized as an important influence on the development of the younger receivers. Burleson was also effective running end-arounds, carrying the ball eleven times for 85 yards.

I know what you’re thinking, Drew Stanton a 13 seed when Shaun Hill was given a 14 seed? Yep, it was that epic month of Movember, yes, Movember that put Stanton over the top. Drew may not have been wearing a uniform on game day this year but he did rock a sweet ‘stache for a solid quarter of the season. How can you deny that?

(4 seed) Chris Houston vs. (13 seed) Erik Coleman

Not only was Chris Houston the team leader in interceptions with five, he was one of just four players in the NFL to return a pair of interceptions for touchdowns. The first was a 56-yarder from Tony Romo that helped bring the Lions back against the Cowboys while the other was a 100-yard return off Tim Tebow in Denver.

Erik Coleman signed as a free agent with the Lions prior to the lockout going into effect and was expected to start next to Louis Delmas. A broken leg ended Coleman’s season after just two tackles in four games.

Who should advance to the second round of the 2011 SideLion Report Player of the Year Tournament?

  • Chris Houston (96%, 23 Votes)
  • Erik Coleman (4%, 1 Votes)

Total Voters: 24
