Martin Mayhew Lays Out Detroit Lions’ Free Agency Strategy

With the coordinators re-signed and an extension for head coach Jim Schwartz likely in the works, the Lions are beginning to turn their attention to their roster. A contract extension for wide receiver Calvin Johnson appears to be the first order of business although it remains to be seen how lengthy a process that runs out to be. With a 2012 cap number in the neighborhood of $20 million, the Lions could have their backs against the salary cap wall until Megatron’s extension is finalized.

Fans looking for the Lions to make a big splash via free agency won’t want to hear this but the team’s priorities will center around retaining their own players, namely Cliff Avril, Stephen Tulloch and Jeff Backus. The team is free to talk with their own free agents but don’t expect any news, especially with players like Avril and Tulloch who would probably like to get a better idea where the market would set the value of their new contract.
