I started to think about Detroit Lions player awards late in the regular season but I wanted to do something fun and a little different. Recognizing that sites like this only exist because of our great readers, I wanted you to have a say in it as well.
Now, I’m proud to announce the SideLion Report Detroit Lions Player of the Year tournament for the 2011 season. Each day will bring a new matchup with the winner determined by a reader poll until we’ve worked our way through the entire tournament and just one player remains. That player will then be bestowed with the supreme honor of being recognized as the SideLion Report Detroit Lions player of the year.
The players have been roughly seeded into a 56-player tournament. One side of the bracket is made up of offensive and special teams players while the opposite side is filled with defensive players to ensure and offense (or special teams) vs. defense final matchup.
Some of the seeding was forced to create a special teams pod and an offensive line pod to and for other bracketing considerations. Remember, creating a bracket isn’t the exercise to focus on here, picking a player of the year is.
Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson are one seeds on the offensive side with Cliff Avril and Ndamukong Suh find themselves on the one line for the defense. Jason Hanson, Jeff Backus, Kyle Vanden Bosch and Stephen Tulloch also receive first round byes as two seeds.
Voting is underway, check the SLR home page for the current matchup.
