SLR Game Balls: Detroit Lions Defense Set the Tone Early

We’ll talk more about the game later but I wanted to take a quick moment after a wild ending to recognize two players that helped give the Lions the lead they needed to still be ahead when the clock expired.

Cliff Avril: It took only one offensive play by the Vikings for Cliff Avril to make his presence known. With the Vikings backed up inside their own ten yard line, Avril got around the edge and knocked the ball out of Christian Ponder’s hand for a fumble that was recovered by Stephen Tulloch in the end zone. Avril was also the man that finally came away with the ball after the wild fumble play that started with the Vikings looking to win the game from the Lions one yard line.

Alphonso Smith: It took a lot of patience and a few injuries before Alphonso Smith finally got his chance last week and he proved he is more than just some run of the mill fill in with his play today. Smith pulled in two of the three interceptions thrown by Christian Ponder on the day including one that he took back 30 yards for a touchdown.
