It wasn’t a great weekend of football for the NFC North outside of the Green Bay Packers. Their consistency has been rewarded by clinching the division title in early December. Now, the Packers can turn their attention to completing the league’s second 16-0 regular season in history.
Here’s a quick rundown of the NFC North for week 13 and a look-ahead to week 14.
Kansas City Chiefs 10, Chicago Bears 3 (box score)
Neither team played with the quarterback they began the season with but Kansas City got a touchdown pass out of Tyler Palko while Caleb Hanie threw three interceptions. The Bears were also without running back Matt Forte for most of the game after he left with a knee injury. He is expected to miss at least two weeks so the Bears playoff chances appear to be fading fast thanks to injuries.
Denver Broncos 35, Minnesota Vikings 32 (box score)
The Adrian Peterson-less Vikings allowed rookie quarterback Christian Ponder to throw the ball 47 times and were largely rewarded with a solid performance. However, it was Ponder’s costly interception late in the fourth quarter that put the Broncos in position to kick a game winning field goal as time expired. Tim Tebow attempted just 15 passes but threw for over 200 yards and two touchdowns.
Green Bay Packers 38, New York Giants 35 (box score)
The Giants got the touchdown and two point conversion they needed to tie the game with under a minute remaining but Aaron Rodgers needed just a couple plays to get the Packers into field goal range. A couple more plays gave the Pack a chip shot for the win, a kick Mason Crosby did not miss. Rodgers and Eli Manning combined for over 700 yards passing and seven touchdowns.
New Orleans Saints, Detroit Lions 17 (box score)
Undisciplined actions by the Lions led to penalties that proved to be too much to overcome in their comeback attempt on Sunday night. Matthew Stafford was a bright spot as he showed no ill-effects of the hand injury that plagued him in previous weeks. Kevin Smith and Nick Fairley both played well early but were limited later in the game after aggravating existing injuries.
