It is an image that has been carefully crafted. It was a plan hatched back at least when he was at Nebraska, according to sources in Lincoln. They would take a guy with a mostly unpronounceable name, playing perhaps the most anonymous position in football, and turn him into one of the biggest endorsement forces in sports.

The overall reaction was tepid from the tens of thousands inside Ford Field, but the cheers edged out the jeers as Nickelback performed its new single, “When We Stand Together,” backed by flames, fireworks and about 1,000 local dancers and moshers.

It appears as if the Detroit Lions will be without at least one defensive starter when they face the NFL’s top-ranked offense next week in the New Orleans Saints.
