Week Nine is almost in the books but there is still the Monday Night Football game to play and it presents an interesting dilemma for Detroit Lions fans. This season has changed the way Lions fans have to watch other games since the Lions appear poised to make a run at a playoff spot. “Which team I like best” or “I just want to see a good game” has to be replaced by “Which outcome is best for the Lions” when choosing who to cheer on in non-Lions game.
That brings us to tonight’s game. As Lions fans, should we be cheering for the Bears or the Eagles?
Cheering on the Bears, or any other division rival for that matter, just doesn’t seem natural. The Lions two game losing streak opened the door for the Bears to catch up to the Lions in the race for second place in the NFC North and into the NFC Wild Card chase. A Bears loss would certainly give the Lions some breathing room in the division and when considering the greater playoff picture. A Bears win puts them just a game behind the Lions heading into next week’s showdown.
OK, that sounds good. The only problem? That means the Eagles won.
A win gets the Eagles back to the .500 mark and very much alive in the chase for a playoff berth, especially given their performance of late. Evening up their record would help erase the pain of their surprisingly slow start after entering with high expectations. The Eagles will be a scary team if they get rolling and the Lions won’t be able to do anything about it since the two teams do not face each other.
There is the difference to me.
The Lions already have one win over the Bears and have the opportunity to knock them off again next week. A Bears win over the Eagles gives the Lions an extra element of control over their own playoff destiny.
