Predictions and Simulations Favor Detroit Lions over Atlanta Falcons

Seth Wickersham was finally rewarded last week for picking against the Lions. It was his third straight week doing such despite the overwhelming support the Lions were receiving in the form of picks by the rest of the ESPN panel of experts. Wickersham is back to picking the Lions this week while Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen are the lone members of the eight man panel to pick the Falcons.

Vegas has the Lions as a 3.5 point favorite but the 10,000 simulations run by the people at AccuScore leans more heavily towards the Lions. They put the Lions as 63% to 36% favorites with an average score of 27.9 to 23.1.

Video Game simulation in Madden 12 has the Lions edging the Falcons by a score of 27-24 thanks to a big game from Calvin Johnson. The sim is presented with the following recap:

When you’re playing the Detroit Lions, no lead is safe. That’s because at any point, Matthew Stafford can launch the ball up in the air and have Calvin Johnson rise above the defense for the win. And that’s exactly what happens against Atlanta. With just over two minutes left on the clock and the Lions down by four, Stafford rifles the ball 23 yards to Megatron who snatches the ball out of the air in the end zone for the win.
