SLR Game Balls in Detroit Lions’ First Loss

The weekly game ball post follows a Lions loss for the first time this season. As you can imagine, this is a lot harder to put together than the previous five editions. Anywho, here goes:

Calvin Johnson – Megatron’s season opening touchdown streak ends at five but he still had a big impact on the game. His six catches were enough to eclipse the 100-yard mark for the day. The offense lacked big play ability outside of plays to CJ and it wasn’t his fault he wasn’t targeted in the end zone.

Mike Carey and Mike Pereira – The former head of officiating (Pereira) indicated to the FOX broadcast team that he thought the call of incomplete on Nate Burleson’s touchdown catch would stand for the same reasons the Calvin Johnson’s potential game winning catch in week one last year was waved off. Referee Mike Carey went under the hood to review the play and determined that Burleson had held on to the ball long enough to “complete the process of the catch” before the ball left his grasp. After hearing Carey’s ruling, Pereira did the right thing and acknowledged that common sense dictates that the touchdown count. Finally.
