SLR Game Balls: Detroit Lions at Dallas Cowboys

I’ll be honest, I started thinking about this post at halftime. I asked myself, who has actually played well for the Lions? I couldn’t answer the question. I threw it out in the SideLion Report live blog and Brandon Pettigrew was mentioned although I didn’t feel that he had much of an impact on the game despite making a nice first quarter catch. Ashlee Palmer was another answer. True, he came up with the big stop of the Cowboys on a fourth down play on the one-yard line but let’s be honest, if Ashlee Palmer is your best player you’re in trouble.

Thankfully there was another half yet to play and enough time for some Lions to earn legitimate game balls.

Calvin Johnson – There is only one player in the history of the NFL to catch two touchdown passes in each of the first four games of the season. That player is Calvin Johnson. His ability to go up and catch the ball in the end zone in the midst of triple coverage sets him apart from other receivers in the league. When the Lions were on the doorstep for the game winning score it was CJ that Matthew Stafford looked to for his dependability. Megatron is a big time performer that stepped up in a big time win.

Stephen Tulloch – It was his interception that set up the game winning score but Stephen Tulloch was an active member of the defense for most of the day. He hit Tony Romo on a third down play when the Cowboys were backed up deep in their own territory and totaled ten tackles and two assists. This is the kind of performance the Lions were looking for when they signed Tulloch as a free agent.
