Detroit Lions Safety Randy Phillips Named in University of Miami Scandal

The investigative team at Yahoo! Sports released their latest expose today and it is a doozy. The gist is this: University of Miami booster Nevin Shapiro’s involvement in a ponzi scheme afforded him the ability to lavish at least 72 Hurrican athletes with impermissible benefits over an eight year period.

Shapiro is currently in jail so he had plenty of time to provide information to the Yahoo! investigation that reportedly included 100 hours of interviews over the course of an 11 month period. The result is an amazingly detailed accounting of the actions of Shapiro within the University of Miami athletic department down to the details surrounding individual players and coaches.
