Early NFL Power Rankings Place Detroit Lions in the Teens

Everyone is tied in the preseason standings with 0-0 records but that doesn’t mean various media outlets can’t start their weekly power rankings.

CBS Sports put the Lions at 23 in their pre-draft power rankings, Fox Sports had them at 18 after the draft and ESPN also has them 18th as we anticipate the start of preseason games.

ESPN released their power rankings yesterday and offered the following comment:

The Lions have “sleeper” written all over them, but only if quarterback Matthew Stafford stays healthy.

NFL.com analyst Elliot Harrison released his power rankings today. He has the Lions a bit higher, 15th to be exact, and says the following:

Lions fans officially can’t blame Matt Millen if this team goes 6-10. It’s been three years A.M., and Detroit has as much talent as anyone. Risky move giving Nick Fairley a guaranteed contract, considering his reputation. But if he’s even 80 percent of Ndamukong Suh, and Matthew Stafford can start, oh, I don’t know, 12 games, look out.

Harrison has the Lions above the Bears (16th) but eighth best in the NFC overall. That won’t be good enough to secure a playoff berth but I think a lot of Lions fans would consider a second place finish in the division a successful season.
