Mikel Leshoure’s Season Ends Before it Begins

Sigh.

The Lions got some good news this morning when Titus Young and Gosder Cherilus returned to practice only to have Mikel Leshoure go down with a torn achilles that will cost him his rookie season. From the official Detroit Lions twitter account:

Schwartz: “Mikel Leshoure tore his achilles in practice today. He’s going to be out for the season.”

The injury will require surgery which could occur as soon as tomorrow. Lost seasons due to achilles injuries is becoming something of a league-wide epidemic as Leshoure’s makes for a total of nine.

Maurice Morris will find himself as the primary backup to Jahvid Best for the time being. It remains to be seen if he will hold that spot into the season or if the Lions will kick the tires on free agents like Tiki Barber or Ricky Williams [update: Ricky Williams has since signed with the Baltimore Ravens]. It has been Martin Mayhew‘s style to find bargains as other teams define roles and rosters get trimmed down later in camp, NFL Spin Zone discusses Dallas Cowboys running back Tashard Choice as one, well, choice.
