Detroit Lions Have Crisp First Practice, Alphonso Smith Has Broken Foot

We’ll start with the good news.

Matthew Stafford thought the first practice went well, so well in fact it felt like picking up where they left off at the end of last season. Paula Pasche provides the quote on twitter:

#Lions Matthew Stafford on 1st practice today: “We moved well. Everybody looked like it was the last practice of the year last year.”

It wasn’t just a player that was happy with the way things went. Another tweet from Pasche:

#Lions Schwartz on 1st practic: No fumbled exchanges, no false starts, no offsides, concentration level was good. I thought they were crisp.

So far so good as it appears the Lions don’t have to worry about any post-lockout rust. Jason Hanson’s leg also appeared strong according to Chris McCosky.

Now for the bad news.

We already knew that Jeff Backus was entering camp with a pectoral injury, said today that there is no timetable for his return. hopefully this doesn’t result in lost regular season games. Cornerback Alphonso Smith showed up with his foot in a boot due to a broken foot he suffered while working out three weeks ago. Smith is optimistic about his availability for week one.
