Detroit Lions Add Free Agent Defensive Back

It isn’t a name Lions fans have been hoping for but the Lions come to an agreement with a free agent cornerback today. Maurice Leggett, formerly of the Kansas City Chiefs, will be a Detroit Lion according to the twitter account of his representation:

"BLUEPRINT SPORTS FAMILY…..congrats to @almighty31 CB/FS Maurice Leggett OF THE DETROIT LIONS ON HIS DEAL!"

Leggett spent the 2010 season on injured reserve with a knee injury but played in 22 combined games for the Chiefs in 2008 and 2009 at cornerback and safety. He was an undrafted free agent out of NCAA Division II power Valdosta State but became the first undrafted Chief to win the team’s rookie of the year award.

Leggett has one career interception – a pick-six off Jay Cutler in 2008. Lions fans wouldn’t mind seeing that feat repeated in Honolulu blue and silver. He also has this fumble recovery for a touchdown to his credit:

Those that follow the Kansas City Chiefs are far more qualified to speak about what this acquisition means so I got with Patrick Allen, editor at Arrowhead Addict, and he sent me the following:

"Leggett was kind of a fan favorite after he made the team as an unddrafted free agent in 2008. He played a lot of nickel corner that year. He did alright in that role but he mostly got remembered for one pick and for being in the right place at the right time on a botched fake FG in which the Raiders tried to their holder throw the ball between his legs to fat as Sebastian Janikowski. It was pretty hilarious. You can still see it here on Youtube. He can’t catch. Haley tried to use him as a punt return man in 2009 and he fumbled almost every time. Every time he went on the field tocatch a punt I peed a little.Leggett ended up winning the rookie of the year award for the Chiefs in 2008. Then again, the Chiefs were terrible in 2008 going 2-14. Their defense was putrid (coordinated by Gunther Cunningham) so saying Leggett was the team’s best rookie is like saying you’re skinniest kid at fat camp.Anyway, in 2009 the Chiefs were still terrible but they were terrible with mostly different players. Leggett hung on in the new regime and again was playing some nickel corner. He briefly had to step in for an injured Brandon Flowers and he got horribly abused. Then he got hurt and went on IR.Then he got hurt again in 2010 and went on IR.So basically you are getting a guy who hasn’t really played football in two years, wasn’t drafted and wasn’t ever really that good to begin with. He’s pretty much only in Detroit because Gunther is crazy and probably has a hard-on for him.I’m not saying he might not develop. He had some skill and showed flashes at times for sure. But don’t be surprised if he gets cut before the season starts. But I do suggest following Leggett’s twitter. It never makes any sense and usually details the trials and tribulations of his relationships with various women. @almighty31. It gets annoying after a while but it will entertain you for at least a week. I stopped following him a year ago.Sorry Lions fans. Wish I had better news for you on this front. Then again, you are going to have the meanest defensive line possible ever this season so I’m not feeling too bad for you. Just don’t get your shit together until after you play KC. Cool?"
