Jeff Backus Has Injured Left Pectoral

The Detroit Lions will begin training camp with injury concerns at right tackle and a new report says that will be the case at left tackle as well.

The Detroit Free Press is reporting that Jeff Backus has an injury to his left pectoral muscle that is believed to be a partial tear:

Detroit Lions left tackle Jeff Backus recently suffered a left pectoral injury, believed to be a partially torn muscle, and it’s unclear whether he’ll be ready for the start of training camp.

Neither Backus nor his agent, Pat Dye, returned phone calls nor text messages seeking comment, but the Lions are aware of Backus’ injury. A team source described the injury as “not serious.”

If the issue is just a partial tear then Backus may not miss significant time. Other NFL players with a similar injury have missed about four weeks during the season. It is hard to know when he might be ready to play since we don’t know when the injury occurred but four weeks from today is two days prior to the Lions second preseason game.
