Money, not age, should be concern for Lions trying to sign Nnamdi Asomugha

by Free Agency

Nnamdi Asomugha would be a great fit for the Lions, as long as the price is right.

As we start to hear more and more positive words on the NFL lockout soon to be ending (I hope) rumors and speculation on free agency and trade start to come out more for the Detroit Lions.

NFL blogger, Gil Brandt really made Detroit Lion fans excited on June 21st when he came out to say this.

“I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they make a big play for Asomugha,” Brandt said. “And I think he would consider the situation in Detroit and playing for Jim Schwartz, who has won the respect of his team. A cornerback’s best friend is a great defensive line, and right now the Lions have a pretty good group of defensive linemen.”

Nnamdi Asomugha is known as one of the best, maybe even the best, cornerbacks in the NFL today. Considering the corner position is a huge need for the Lions, there is no wonder why Lions fans would be excited. But there a few Lions fans who think otherwise. Some Lions fans think he may be too old since he is 30 years old. To give my perspective on the age concern, corners actually seem to get better with age. For example, Charles Woodson of the Green Bay Packers. He is 34 years old and had a fantastic year last season with 92 tackles, two sacks, and two interceptions, not to mention he was a big part of the reason why the Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl. So, the question of Asomugha’s age does not really concern me. What does concern me though is the money that he may be looking for.

As the best corner back in the NFL, he wants to get paid like one. In 2009 the Oakland Raiders resigned Nnamdi Asomugha to a two year deal; worth 28.5 million dollars (14.25 million per year) which also included a third year option that would have paid him 16.87 million dollars, but that is only if the Oakland Raiders would have accepted his option, which they obviously did not since now he is a free agent. Imagine what he may ask for now after having that contract and still being in the prime of his career as a top flight corner.

In my perspective, I think the Lions should look at Nnamdi Asomugha because he would fill a huge need in the secondary that would make an impact right away, but they should look at him to an extent. I would not throw a ridiculous amount of money at him like most teams will most likely do. If I were the Lions I would keep my limits and not break the bank on throwing him an offer, especially with a team that is full of young players that will need extensions sooner than later.
