The owners do not rely on their income from the teams to survive. It is a vanity pastime for them. But being the egotistical, ultra competitive businessmen that they are, they need to inspire some kind of conflict for them to win at. Versus the Fans? No, too easy to befuddle and beatdown. Now the players,and unionized ones to boot. That's more up their alley. This is how the owners get known. They would be nobodies outside their industry if they did not own an NFL team. Who would have known George Steinbrenner if he did not own the Yankees. Unfortunately for us fans, the owners don't care about the game, just making money from it and a name for themselves. The players for the most part are people like us that have a mortgage to meet and have almost no job security. I know who I am pulling for.
