There has been a lot of speculation lately about Sammie Lee Hill possibly being on the trading block because the Lions have “too many defensive tackles”. I find that statement really weird because the Lions actually only have five defensive tackles in Ndamukong Suh, Nick Fairley, Corey Williams, Andre Fluellen, and Sammie Lee Hill. Also in the NFL you can never have enough defensive tackles, especially when you have offensive players like the Super Bowl champ Aaron Rodgers and the elite running back Adrian Peterson in your same division.
As far as how much time Sammie Lee Hill will get on a game to game basis, I’m sure Sammie Lee Hill will play. The Detroit Lions defensive line coach Kris Kocurek is most likely going to be doing a rotational type of scheme with all of the defensive tackles including Sammie Lee Hill to keep everyone fresh and to confuse opposing offenses. For all we know we may see all four guys including Suh, Fairley, Williams, and Lee Hill all on the front four on certain plays since all of those guys bring so much versatility to their games.
Its pretty simple, when you have something good why get rid of it? That’s the case for Sammie Lee Hill. He’s a very solid player, who still has a ton of upside and potential being that he is only 24 years old. What would be the point of getting rid of that for a possible mid round pick?

Considering he is from a really small college and is just beginning to realize his potential at a mid round salary, I think trading him would be insane. I have seen it mentioned on a few blogs but that is just speculative. Let’s see how Fairley adapts to the pro game and leave the quality depth alone. 4 good players on the interior line is a good problem to have. Trade Flu for one of those 7th rd picks that Mayhew loves.
I’m really high on Hill and found it ridiculous that he was not often mentioned when many talked of the Lions potential dominance from the defensive tackle position after they drafted Fairley.
I can understand the argument of using the strength to bolster other positions (CB or LB) but I don’t anything wrong with leaving a big strength a big strength. Trade one of those pieces away and the Lions are one injury away from becoming much closer to ordinary.
Much agreed, I think him and Corey Williams are both never really mentioned when it comes to the potential of this defensive line. Those two guys were big parts of the defensive line last season and I expect them to be even bigger parts this season even with drafting Nick Fairley. You are going to need all the defensive tackles in Suh,Williams,Fairley, and Sammie Lee Hill to possibly be dominant. I really can’t wait to see it all work together next season.
Im also really high on Sammie Lee Hill. Hes the type of player that may not get the pretty looking numbers, but hes going to make the plays that matter.
