The speculation finally ends tonight. The NFL draft’s first round is tonight (you’re joining us for the live chat, right?), here are a few scenarios to watch:
- Many believe Cam Newton will be the first overall pick despite wide-spread opinions that he should not be. If Newton becomes the first pick, it can largely be attributed to the importance of the position. The quarterback watch continues beyond Newton, however. Some suggest that as many as four or five quarterbacks could come off the board before the Lions pick at 13. That would present a dream scenario in which non-QB talent drops to Lions when it otherwise wouldn’t (and shouldn’t).
- Lions beat writer Tom Kowalski has opined that the Lions best chance at a trade down is if Julio Jones remains on the board when pick 13 comes around. A couple early surprises mixed with a run on quarterbacks could put this scenario in play, but will there be a deal to be made? That’s why we have to watch!
- One team to watch tonight is the Dallas Cowboys. They have been mentioned as a potentially landing spot for a number of players also linked to the Lions. SLR staff writer Ross Husson dealt with the potential impact the Cowboys could have on the Lions draft in a recent article. It is worth a re-read ahead of tonight’s festivities.
- There has been a lot of talk about Jimmy Smith and his red flags. The Lions may not have anything to do with him but I’ll be interested to see how far he falls and which team pulls the trigger on this talented but troubled cornerback.
