Detroit Lions NFL Draft Countdown: 14 Days

Join us each day as we count down towards the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft. The countdown runs from 50 to zero and the number of days remaining will inspire the post for that day. Think of this as your NFL draft paper chain that loses one link each day!

With 14 days left until the NFL draft, I want to state that I am thankful for Shaun Hill, the man that currently wears the number 14 for the Detroit Lions.

I’d be even more thankful for a full season of health for Matthew Stafford, but it was nice that the Lions had backup quarterbacks that gave them opportunities to win last season. As a Lions fan it has been frustrating to watch other teams succeed with backup quarterbacks while we’ve spent a number of years watching a team that can’t win with their starting quarterback. Matt Moore stepped in for Jake Delhomme in 2009 and went 4-1. The Pittsburgh Steelers survived the first four weeks of the 2010 season without Ben Roethlisberger. Who could forget Chris Weinke relief appearance against the Lions in 2005 in which he brought the Panthers from behind for the win?

Don’t get me wrong, I’d hate to have to see Shaun Hill again just because that means bad things for Stafford, but I’m sure glad to have him just in case. It speaks to the improvement of depth on the roster, something we should all be thankful for.

Players drafted number 14 overall by the Detroit Lions:
Bob Cifers (1944), Jim Kekeris (1947)
