Detroit Lions NFL Draft Countdown: 40 Days

Join us each day as we count down towards the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft. The countdown runs from 50 to zero and the number of days remaining will inspire the post for that day. Think of this as your NFL draft paper chain that loses one link each day!

40 days remain until the NFL Draft gets underway so that is the number we will focus on today. The first thing that pops into most people’s mind in connecting the NFL Draft and the number 40 is the 40 yard dash. This is the number most scouts use in evaluating player speed. Some look within that time to look at explosion in the first ten yards but this slice remains part of the overall picture provided by the 40 yard dash.

The Oakland Raiders have made a habit of targeting players that light up the stopwatch to the point that some wonder if the Raiders allow the 40 time to set their entire draft board.

Speed is certainly important factor in the NFL game but it is just one trait. The Lions knew they needed to add speed at the running back position and targeted Jahvid Best to help fill that hole. That being said, there was a lot more that they liked about Best than just his 40 time.

Here are the 40 yard dash times for some of the Lions’ 2010 draft picks:

2010 Draft
Ndamukong Suh: 4.98 sec
Jahvid Best 4.35 sec
Amari Spievey: 4.47 sec
Jason Fox: 5.26
Willie Young: 4.82

Players drafted number 40 overall by the Detroit Lions:
Al Baker (1978), Rich Strenger (1983), Daniel Bullocks (2006)
