Join us each day as we count down towards the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft. The countdown runs from 50 to zero and the number of days remaining will inspire the post for that day. Think of this as your NFL draft paper chain that loses one link each day!
We’re down to 41 days until the NFL draft gets underway. The draft has been an exciting event for Lions fans for quite some time, even during the Matt Millen-era. If we take the number 41 and split it apart we get 4 and 1, two numbers of significance when defining the Millen draft mess.
The one represents the round number and the four represents the number of wide receivers taken in that round between 2003 and 2007.
It was Charles Rogers in 2003, Roy Williams in 2004, Mike Williams in 2005 and Calvin Johnson in 2007. 4 in 1.
Roy Williams had some productive years but the selection of Calvin Johnson is the only pick that doesn’t look horrible in hindsight. Not only did many of those picks not work out in their own right, it also meant the rest of the roster was left without the benefit of first round talent (or at least talent that Matt Millen deemed to be of first round quality). Not a great way to go about building a team, eh?
Players drafted number 41 overall by the Detroit Lions:
Casey Jones (1943)
