This just in: the Detroit Lions keep their plans close to the vest.
Anyone that was expecting the Lions to lay their off-season game plan out on the table is delusional. That being said, it would be nice to have a few clues about what Martin Mayhew and Jim Schwartz have on their to-do list.
So far, we’ve only been let in on what they won’t do.
There has been some discussion between the league and the players associate as to whether or not teams have the ability to use franchise and transitional player tags in light of the current collective bargaining disharmony. The point is rendered moot in the Lions case since they have already decided that they won’t use those tags, even if they are truly available.
Translation: The Lions aren’t going to overpay with the big bucks that a franchise tag requires just because they feel they can’t afford to lose a player.
Looking for the Lions to make a big trade or free agent acquisition? Hugh Bernreuter of The Saginaw News suggests it isn’t going to happen. It isn’t just his opinion, his piece is based on quotes from Jim Schwartz.
Translation: Don’t expect the Lions to mortgage the future just to break into the playoffs this year. The Lions will target specific players that have a skill set to fit a particular need.
