June: one of the most hated months in the calendar for me. Not only is it hot outside with nothing to do, but there is next to no football activity. It wasn’t any different for the Lions in 2010. The month saw plenty of stories like “rookie x making big impressions on coaching staff” or “rookie y signs a 3 year deal with team”. There was, however, two stories that highlighted the month of June.

Right on the first of the month, there was a story out that the St. Louis Rams might be parting ways with their Pro Bowl caliber safety in Oshiomogho Atogwe, who is somewhat of a local product. He is from Windsor, ON and many fans were salivating with the idea of a Delmas-Atogwe duo (indeed it would’ve been awesome). The story dragged on for nearly the entire month with different outlets reporting different things, and several mentioned Detroit as a possible landing spot for the stud free safety. In the end however, it was not to be as Atogwe and the Rams agreed to a five year deal.

The NFL Draft fresh in people’s minds, and rookies like Ndamukong Suh and Jahvid Best were soon going to get their first taste of the NFL. Even before Suh stepped a foot on the football field, he had the second highest selling jersey for a rookie, after of course Timothy Tebow. During OTA’s, coaches and players raved about Suh’s work ethic, and Best’s explosiveness. The OTA’s also gave the coaches and fans a chance to see the many new faces the 2010 offseason had brought so far. Players like Kyle Vanden Bosch, Tony Scheffler, Corey Williams, and Army grad Caleb Campbell, who was finally eligible to play in the NFL, were amongst the many new faces in Allen Park.

The month of May not only brought flowers from the April showers, but saw right tackle Gosder Cherilus blossom into the player we all thought he could become during OTAs. In other news, Daunte Culpepper signed with the Lions…err the Mountain Lions of Sacramento that is. C.C. Brown landed in the MoTown, Giants nation rejoiced. Pacman Jones signed with the Bengals, Lions nation weeped. And we finally found out what arouses the nonchalant Jim Schwartz…YouTube videos of Jahvid Best.

April means NFL Draft.

Possibilities abound in the draft but fans always want to talk about the least likely scenario: the trade down. That took a big hit early in April when the Redskins completed a trade for Donovan McNabb. The Lions only hope to trade down would have been to have someone willing to jump the Redskins to grab a quarterback but the need to jump Washington fanished when they addressed their quarterback spot (or so they thought at the time!).

The Rams were sold on Sam Bradford as the number one pick quite early in April, that was made apparent when they released Mark Bulger. Suh was the overwhelming favorite to be drafted number two but the Lions were never willing to tip their hand. Oklahoma State left tackle Russell Okung was also a possibility as a darkhorse pick.
