Louis Delmas, E.J. Biggers: “Brothers” Meet Again

As a soon to be graduate of Western Michigan University, I think it is only fair for me to discuss two individuals that you will see showcased on the field this Sunday.  The duo are long time best friends, as well as former WMU standouts.  So…who am I referring to?  Detroit Lions starting safety Louis Delmas and Tampa Bay Buccaneers starting corner, E.J. Biggers.  These second year pros go way back.  Allow me to explore the history between two incredibly gifted athletes.

Lou Delmas has had an interesting past.  He woke up one day when he was about 10 years old to police knocking at the door.  His parents, who had been running a cocaine operation, were well aware the police were on their way.  This is why Lou’s parents fled to their native land, Haiti without warning the previous night.  Lou has not seen them since the incident, and has talked to them only a few times.

Although Lou’s parents left without warning, his dad set him up to go live with his aunt in Miami.  When this didn’t work his dad again set Lou up to live with a woman friend of his, which was again in Miami.  This is when he met E.J. Biggers.  The two hit it off almost immediately.  They ended up playing on the same high school team, where Louis Delmas was the running back and E.J. Biggers was the quarterback.  Delmas pretty much didn’t have a childhood.  He had no one to look up to, and was pretty much on his own.  In high school, the Biggers took Lou under their wing.  Because the lady he was living with moved away, Lou moved in with the Biggers to avoid not playing football together anymore.  Lou today refers to Mrs. Biggers as “Mom.”

The duo went on to play football at Western Michigan University.  I had the pleasure of being able to watch these two guys play.  Whereas many of you Lions fans are aware of Lou’s hard-hitting missile mentality, let me tell you; E.J. showcased a lot of the same stuff.  Sitting in the stands at Waldo Stadium at Western Michigan, I honestly never really had the thought that I was watching two futures NFLers, let alone starters right in front of me.

Louis Delmas was drafted in the second round by yours truly, the Detroit Lions.  He has been a starter his entire career.  E.J. Biggers on the other hand, was taken on day two and drafted in the 7th round, taken #217 overall. After being placed on the IR last year, it seemed almost a sure thing that a 7th rounder wouldn’t make it on the roster the following year. Like Delmas has done his entire life, Biggers overcame adversity and has started this entire season for the Buccaneers.  The Lions face the Buccaneers, 1:00 PM Sunday in   Tampa Bay.  You better believe that Mrs. Biggers will be in attendance cheering on her boys.
