You are right on about depth. It will take a lot more than upgrading the talent of the starting line up, this is a project that extends all the way down the roster.

YOU FAILED TO MENTION THAT PETERMAN BLEW HIS KNEE OUT IN A PRESEASON GAME WHEN HE WAS AT DALLAS, NEARLY ENDING HIS CAREER. PETERMAN HAD AN EXCELLENT YEAR LAST SEASON. YOU FAILED TO MENTION HE INJURED HIS FOOT AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS SEASON AND HE HASN'T MISSED A GAME. I'M SURE THE FOOT INJURY HE IS NURSING HAS TO DO WITH HIS PERFORMANCE THIS YEAR. IF PETERMAN CAN STAY HEALTHY HE IS AN ABOVE AVERAGE GUARD.

Another aspect is depth. Why do the Lions always find a way to lose? I propose that because the lack of W's in recent years, there is a smaller pool of players willing to join the losing culture resulting in poor depth in many positions. Having poor depth at multiple positions leads to fatigue and holes in coverage/protection in the 4th quarter; resulting in an inability to stop a game winning drive on defense or the sack that could have been a game winning touchdown pass.
