Drew Stanton expected to Start Sunday

The Detroit Lions find themselves in yet another QB cluster.  Yesterday, Shaun Hill was unable to practice due to a finger injury.  It was later determined that Hill’s right index finger was in fact broken putting his season in jeopardy.  He reportedly broke his finger in the first half of the Thanksgiving game and played through the pain.  Starting the season at third string, former Michigan State quarterback Drew Stanton is expected to make his second career start Sunday against the Chicago Bears…or is he?

The only two healthy QB’s on Detroit’s roster are Drew Stanton and Zac Robinson.  J.T. O’Sullivan and Josh McCown worked out for the team yesterday but there is no word as to a signing.  With Hill and Stafford out, the Lions are almost forced to get a third QB.

We have all seen what Drew can bring to the table, and quite frankly I don’t need to see anymore.  It’s beyond me why he remains on the 53 man roster.  A lot of fans make the argument that Stanton has never gotten a chance.  Even though this is false, his last chance will be Sunday if he in fact does start.  This season alone, Stanton has not started but has been presented with a chance to win a football game for his team on two separate occasions (against the Jets and Giants) and has failed to do so.

I would rather see Zac Robinson start.  Wait, Zac who?  Many fans do not know who Zac Robinson is, so allow me to fill you in.  Zac Robinson is a 24 year old rookie out of Oklahoma State, where he put up rather impressive numbers.  He was drafted this year by the New England Patriots in the 7th round then dropped, picked up by Seahawks, and dropped again.  He now finds himself in Detroit.  He has no NFL game experience, which is fine to me.  The reason it is fine is because, what do the Lion’s have to lose?  We already know what Stanton offers, so why not give another guy a shot?

Let’s face it, either QB calls for disaster.  No matter what happens Sunday, I think it’s safe to say that the offense being ran by either QB will get more than 5 first downs, contrary to what happened in Arizona Monday night.  With the news of Shaun Hill possibly being out for the season, the Lions are bound to sign a veteran free agent like J.T. O’Sullivan or Josh McCown.  If Hill is out for the remainder of the season, and Stafford can’t go I expect a veteran to come in and start but not this week…Vinny Testaverde anyone?    Expectations might be low Sunday but playing Robinson is in the best interest of the organization.
